In Southeast Asia's bustling e-commerce ecosystem, AI (Artificial Intelligence) is reshaping online selling. Yet, Filipino sellers continue to lag behind their regional counterparts in adopting these powerful tools—and that gap is creating both challenges and opportunities.

The Current Landscape: Awareness vs. Action

Lazada’s “Bridging the AI Gap: Online Seller Perceptions and Adoption Trends in Southeast Asia” report—conducted with Kantar and surveyed across 1,214 sellers—found that while 68% of e-commerce sellers in Southeast Asia are familiar with AI, only about 37% have actually integrated it into daily operations (Marketing-Interactive, InsiderPH, PR Newswire).

Even more striking, sellers believe they’ve embedded AI in 47% of their business, but the true figure hovers around 37%, highlighting a clear gap between perception and reality (InsiderPH, Digital Commerce 360).

The Philippines: Low Adoption, High Potential

Philippines-based sellers fare lower than the regional average. Only 35% fully embrace AI, compared to the 48% regional average (Philstar, BusinessWorld Online). Actual use of AI in operations stands at 32%, versus 37% across Southeast Asia (BusinessWorld Online).

When profiling sellers:

  • AI Adepts (19%) integrate AI widely—well below the 24% regional mark.

  • AI Aspirants (44%) are making progress, but still behind the regional average of 50%.

  • AI Agnostics (37%), those with minimal or no AI use, exceed the regional average of 26% (NoypiGeeks, InsiderPH).

What’s Holding Them Back?

The core obstacles for Filipino sellers include:

  1. Infrastructure & ResourcesMany sellers highlight limitations in reliable systems, investment capacity, and operational readiness (BusinessWorld Online, NoypiGeeks).

  2. Cost & ComplexityA majority (about 64%) say adopting AI is too time-consuming or expensive, while 61% remain skeptical about its overall value (Marketing-Interactive, InsiderPH).

  3. Human Resistance to ChangeThough nearly all (around 93%) understand the need for employee training in AI, 75% admit staff still favor familiar, manual methods (Marketing-Interactive, PR Newswire).

Bright Side: Awareness Is High

Despite these hurdles, Filipino online sellers show a strong grasp of AI tools—especially in customer service and marketing. Chatbots, predictive analytics, and inventory tracking rank among the most adopted functions (lazada-com.oss-ap-southeast-1.aliyuncs.com, NoypiGeeks). This suggests a solid foundation from which to scale AI usage—if infrastructure gaps can be addressed.

Why AI Adoption Matters in the Philippines

  1. Accelerated EfficiencyAI automation saves time—be it for product listing optimization, customer support, or inventory control—enabling sellers to focus on growth.

  2. Cost ReductionWhile initial investments may be steep, 91% of Filipino respondents agree that AI leads to long-term cost savings (NoypiGeeks, BusinessWorld Online).

  3. Competitive AdvantageEarly AI adopters can differentiate themselves in the crowded marketplace. Better listings, localized content, and smarter operations create stronger performance.

  4. Workforce EmpowermentAI upskilling not only modernizes operations—it also boosts employees’ skill sets and confidence, reducing resistance to change.
